Facebook and Instagram Marketing for SA SMEs: Organic First, Paid Second

SOCIAL MEDIA DECISION

Social media marketing works when you have something worth sharing — not when you need to fill a content calendar.

Many SA small businesses feel pressured to post daily on Facebook and Instagram. The businesses that actually get results from social media follow a different pattern: they create one genuinely useful post per week, promote it to the right audience, and measure what happens next. Frequency without purpose is noise, not marketing.

The organic social framework

  1. One insight per week — Share one thing your business knows that customers don’t. A tip, a comparison, a common mistake to avoid. This builds authority better than any promotional post.
  2. One proof point per month — A before/after, a testimonial, a result. Social proof is the highest-converting content format on social media.
  3. Stories for immediacy — Use Instagram/Facebook Stories for day-to-day activity, offers, and quick polls. Stories disappear, so quality bar is lower.
  4. Engage, don’t broadcast — Reply to every comment. Spend 10 minutes daily replying to relevant conversations in your niche. Algorithm rewards interaction.

When to add paid social

Add paid promotion when a specific organic post is already performing well (high engagement, shares, saves). Amplify what works rather than boosting everything equally. A monthly budget of R3,000–R5,000 per campaign is enough to test audience and creative for most SA SMEs.
