Email Automation for Ecommerce: The Three Flows Every Store Needs First

EMAIL AUTOMATION DECISION

Automated email flows generate more revenue per contact than any broadcast campaign — but only if they are triggered by real customer actions.

For ecommerce stores, three email flows consistently outperform everything else: the welcome sequence, the abandoned cart flow, and the post-purchase follow-up. Set these up correctly before building any other email automation. Each flow should contain 3-5 emails spread over 7-14 days, with clear tracking and a single conversion goal per email.

The three essential flows

Welcome flow

Trigger: Sign-up. Goal: First purchase within 14 days.

Best practice: Offer a first-purchase discount in email 2. Include your top 3 products with social proof in email 3.

Abandoned cart

Trigger: Cart created but not purchased within 1 hour. Goal: Recover the sale.

Best practice: Send first email within 1 hour, second at 24 hours, third at 72 hours with a small incentive.

Post-purchase

Trigger: Order delivered. Goal: Repeat purchase within 60 days.

Best practice: Thank-you email + delivery update + product care tip + “you might also like” recommendation.

Start with abandoned cart — it recovers the most revenue per hour of setup time. Add the welcome flow next, then post-purchase. Measure each flow’s revenue-per-recipient and conversion rate before optimising further.
