Conversion Rate Optimisation: Where to Start When You Have No Data

CRO DECISION

You cannot optimise what you do not measure — but you also do not need a year of data to find your first 20% improvement.

Many SA businesses delay CRO because they think they need thousands of visitors and months of data. In practice, the biggest conversion gains come from fixing obvious friction points: unclear offers, slow pages, confusing forms, and missing trust signals. Start with a manual audit, fix the worst problems, then measure the impact.

The no-data CRO audit

  1. Load your site on a 3G connection — Does the main content appear within 5 seconds? If not, page speed is your #1 conversion issue.
  2. Read your homepage out loud — Can a first-time visitor understand what you offer within 5 seconds? If not, your value proposition needs work.
  3. Count the CTAs above the fold — More than one? Pick the primary action and make everything else secondary.
  4. Check your mobile lead capture form — Can a user complete it with one hand on a phone? Remove unnecessary fields.
  5. Find your trust gap — Is there proof (testimonial, case study, number, logo) visible near every CTA? Add one where missing.

Setting up basic tracking

Install Google Analytics 4 and Google Tag Manager if you haven’t. Track these five events from day one: page_view, scroll (90%), click (on primary CTA), form_submit, and call_click (tapped phone number). This gives you a baseline without waiting for “enough data.”
