Technical SEO Audit Checklist for WordPress Sites
TECHNICAL SEO DECISION
Most ranking problems are not about content — they are about Google not being able to find, crawl or understand your pages.
A technical SEO audit checks whether search engines can discover, crawl, render and index your important pages. For WordPress sites, common issues include orphaned pages, bloated sitemaps, slow server response, and incorrect canonical tags. Fix these before investing in content or links.
Monthly technical SEO checklist
- Crawl your site — Use Screaming Frog or Sitebulb to find 404s, redirect chains, and missing meta tags.
- Check index coverage — In Google Search Console, review which pages are indexed and which are excluded. Investigate “Crawled — currently not indexed” errors.
- Review sitemap — Ensure your sitemap only includes pages you want indexed. Exclude tag archives, draft pages, and paginated results.
- Test mobile rendering — Use the Mobile-Friendly Test. Check that interactive elements work and text is readable without zoom.
- Audit internal links — Every important page should be reachable within 3 clicks from the homepage. Fix orphan pages.
- Check page speed — Run PageSpeed Insights on your top 10 landing pages. Prioritise mobile scores.
- Validate schema markup — Use Google’s Rich Results Test on pages with structured data (products, FAQs, reviews, LocalBusiness).
Run this checklist monthly. Most technical SEO issues accumulate over time; a monthly catch prevents ranking drift for competitive terms.
